When the osmanthus trees bloomed in my hometown of Nanjing each autumn, the entire city was filled with a golden fragrance. Tiny pale-yellow blossoms, like scattered stars in the treetops, released a soft, sweet aroma that drifted gently through the streets.
After school, my pocket money almost always went toward the sweets that appeared only during osmanthus season. Soft rice cakes scented with osmanthus, sweet lotus root stuffed with sticky rice, and other delicacies carrying that gentle floral flavour which always meant autumn had arrived.
